about

The story of Baldur's murder. Odin and other seers begin to hear prophecies of doom and the end of the world. Seeking their origin, Odin discovers that his beloved son and heir Baldur (the god of sunlight, the spring thaw and the sweet and tender things which make life bearable in the harsh Viking world) has had a dream showing his own death, his parents grieving, and his soul going to the grim underworld: Hel. Determined to prevent this, Odin travels to the grave of an ancient Seeress (in this version the same giantess who speaks in "Ice and Fire") and draws her spirit back from the dead to ask her questions about fate. While Loki elsewhere plots Baldur's death, Odin in disguise learns from the Seeress that Odin will be killed by his blind brother Hod, but when she realizes the questioner is Odin she refuses to say more, repeating prophecies of Ragnarok and the end of all that Odin has created. Determined to save Baldur, his mother Frigg goes through the world asking every single object to swear never to hurt him, and all eagerly do out of love of the god of all things sweet and good, but she fails to ask the Mistletoe, thinking it too delicate and harmless. Now that Baldur is invulnerable, the gods invent a game where they take turns throwing weapons at him to watch them bounce off. During the game, Loki makes an arrow out of mistletoe and tricks Baldur's blind brother Hod into firing it at Baldur, slaying him, triggering Odin's vengeance and sealing the fate of the world: Ragnarok.

This complex and narrative song is closely based on the versions of these stories presented in the Poetic Edda, one of very few medieval Icelandic sources that survives.
